Y No Comerás Carne De Perro

For english version, press here

Gut feelings in Dili

There is an ongoing current event which has occupied my mind completely, even though I was in hospital this week here in Dili, and had to do an acute appendectomy. (I am very grateful to dr. Bob from Australia for his very exact diagnostics and operation, the Swedish anesthesiologist and dr. Joao, from Timor-Leste!).

After some hours, waking up and clearing my mind through what the doctors said was going to be "uncomfort" after the operation (optimists or liars, I don't know, but it was a little bit different than uncomfort!), I hear that my always beloved Sudan has been through a new turmoil with the arrest warrant of president Omar Al-Bashir. As a result, 13 NGOs have been expelled from the country with immediate effect. The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon warned that "the decision by the government of Sudan to expel 13 NGOs involved in aid operations in Darfur will, if implemented, could cause irrevocable damage to humanitarian operations there."

From my private corner, far away now from these events, I do remember still the colours of fear, the stories heard, the people we helped. Those people, with lives lived or to be lived, they are real, with many hopes. We can't and we should not stop remembering and considering them in whatever are the solutions to this conflict. I can't go into political discussions, and really not much more can be said, except that I hope things will change to the better, people in Darfur and Sudan deserve a life without misery and war.
